Dates: June 15-21
What is City Service?
City Service is a week-long service trip to New York City, working with the Bowery Mission, America’s oldest homeless shelter and soup kitchen. This will be the fifteenth year that FOCUS students have served at the Mission.
What is the purpose?
- -To serve the poor and homeless
- -To deepen our understanding of homelessness and the needs of the homeless
- -To forge relationships with people we may not have the chance to otherwise
- -To change the way we think about service and the homeless
- -To learn what the Christian faith has to say about social justice and our responsibility to serve those around us
What is the Bowery Mission?
Located in Manhattan, the Bowery Mission has been reaching out to the city’s homeless population since 1879. Its objective has never changed – to provide hope, food, clothing, and shelter to individuals in crisis. Clients receive nutritious meals, housing, medical/social service support, and clean clothing. For more information about the Bowery Mission, please visit www.bowery.org.
The safety of our students is paramount. They will be under adult supervision at all times and will not be placed in any position of danger.
What will we do?
Our team will spend its days working alongside the Bowery Mission's long-term residents, assisting in work projects, preparing and serving meals, as well as helping with the Mission’s administrative needs. Our time at the mission will be balanced with small group discussions, team dinners, and outings to different parts of NYC.
Where will we stay?
Our group will become a part of the Bowery Mission family. We will be staying together on-site in private group dormitories and joining the front lines of service to homeless and hungry New Yorkers.
How much will it cost?
Cost: $885. Note: transportation to and from the program is not included in the cost. A deposit is not required, but full payment for the program is due when accepted to the program. Scholarships are available; contact your area staff for more information. Other financial questions or general questions about the program should be directed to the FOCUS Programs Office at [email protected] or 203-505-7522.
