In Their Own Words:
Faith, Race, and Allyship
in the FOCUS Community
On March 25th at 8:00 PM we are honored to have three long-standing members of our extended FOCUS family joining us to discuss faith-based allyship in independent schools and within FOCUS. Tracy Somani, Chidilim Menakaya, and Gabe Brown (a FOCUS parent and two recent alumni) will share their perspectives as people of color in our community. We are very grateful to have the opportunity to hear from them.
Joining us from Philadelphia, Tracy Somani is a member of the FOCUS National Board and has four children who participated in FOCUS. Also on the board of the Agnes Irwin School, she has been helping her community think through issues of race, inclusion, and reconciliation. Chidilim Menakaya (ChiChi) is from New Jersey and was intimately involved with FOCUS throughout her four years at Middlesex School (near Boston). She is now a sophomore at Tufts University, where she is helping pioneer a black Christian student fellowship. Born and raised in Atlanta, Gabe Brown attended Woodberry Forest School in Central VA, where he was involved in Woodberry Christian Fellowship/FOCUS. He also attended our Summer Programs and FOCUS Richmond’s spring break trips to Pawleys Island. He is now a freshman at High Point University and an entrepreneur with a streetwear clothing line and a motivational instagram called Crooked Sticks, named for the idea that "God uses crooked sticks to draw straight lines."
The school communities served by FOCUS are more racially and ethnically diverse than ever before. As we encourage all students to explore the Christian faith and its relevance to their world, we are committed to a greater awareness of the experiences of our students, staff, and volunteers of color. We are looking forward to this panel discussion, as part of our ongoing efforts to listen, learn, and love students better.
