Kitchen Volunteers

Kitchen Volunteering

Over the summer we would love to have you and your friends come and help us in the kitchen. You will have a chance to prepare delicious and healthy meals, and to be part of a community devoted to making sure students have a terrific time on the Vineyard. You will be the secret ingredient in making our programs as effective as they can be!

If you are interested in volunteering with us over the summer, please follow these steps:

  1. Learn more about volunteering in the kitchen by reading through our FAQs page.
  2. Review the Volunteer Calendar below to see which weeks we have kitchen volunteer needs.
  3. Request your dates to be a kitchen volunteer.

**Please do not make any travel arrangements until you have received an acceptance email confirming your dates.**

*COVID Notes*

Please visit to see our most up to date COVID-related protocols and requirements.

Testing and Vaccination: It is required that all students, leaders, and volunteers be COVID-19 tested no more than 72 hours prior to arrival for summer programs unless they have received their second dose of vaccine more than 2 weeks prior to arrival. Tests should be timed so that results are received prior to leaving home for the FOCUS program. Documentation will need to be provided to show proof of vaccination or negative test results.

Health Screening: A self-screening questionnaire will need to be submitted online before leaving home (no more than 24 hours prior to arrival).

We are limiting the number of kitchen volunteers to a maximum of 4 people per program. Volunteers are asked to arrive the day before the program begins and stay for the full duration of the program. We ask that you come with a buddy or be comfortable sharing a room with another kitchen volunteer of the same gender. There will be no private single rooms available, all rooms are double occupancy.

Kitchen Volunteer Calendar

Please consult the calendar below to see our needs for kitchen volunteers. Click the blue arrow until you get to May through August. Programs are listed as well as the number of volunteers needed for each program.

Because of the impact of COVID on our programs for Summer 2021, we are asking volunteers to arrive the day before students and stay the full length of the program. If you need to arrive with your student the day the program begins, please email [email protected].

To request dates, please click on the link to create an account and submit your registration request.

The Kitchen Volunteer Coordinator will contact you to discuss your requested dates as necessary. We will do our best to accommodate you, but housing is limited, so it may be necessary to adjust your requested dates. Once your dates have been finalized with the Kitchen Volunteer Coordinator, you will receive an email notifying you of your acceptance to volunteer.

Please do not make any travel arrangements until you have received an acceptance email confirming your dates.

Who do I contact about volunteering in the kitchen?

Please contact the Summer Programs Office on Martha's Vineyard at [email protected] or 508-693-1359 (June to August) with questions about signing up, transportation, or other inquiries.

What kind of work will I be doing?

You will be working alongside our staff to create simple and delicious meals for students. You can expect to be doing different kitchen tasks including baking and other food prep, as well as working with a team to wash dishes and to keep the dining hall clean and sanitary. We will work hard together to not only serve great food, but also have a lot of fun!

Working in the kitchen or on facilities can be a physically strenuous experience. We require our volunteers to be able to be on their feet for 6-8 hours at a time, and be able to lift at least 30 lbs without much difficulty. That being said, there are a variety of jobs for all types of workers and we will work to accommodate the many different skill levels and abilities. We just ask for people who are eager to help and willing to learn! Please email [email protected] to discuss whether or not the work would be a good fit.

Does the program cost anything for me to volunteer?

The only charge is a suggested donation of $50 to cover the cost of the background check that we require for all volunteers that will be around our students, housing, food, etc. To donate, please click here and select the fund as "Study Center Programs".
